Working with her journalist colleague Manon Querouil, Veronique travelled to the Niger Delta region of Nigeria to document the presence of the oil industry in the region in the region, and the activities of a militant group called MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta). The group’s stated objectives were Robin Hood-esque, stealing oil, crudely refining it in mangrove hideouts, and selling it on the black market. They claimed to represent the interests of the local population whose environment was being polluted but who were not benefitting from any of the oil industry revenues or related development.
